Two approaches, one goal There are two common ways to invest with your values in mind. Think of them as two sides of the same coin.

Socially Responsible Investing (SRI) is about leaving out what you don't support. Don't want your money tied up in tobacco companies, weapons manufacturers, or oil and gas? We simply don't invest there. It's your portfolio — it shouldn't fund industries that conflict with your beliefs.

ESG Investing is about seeking out what you do support. ESG stands for Environmental, Social, and Governance — basically a way of grading companies on how they treat the planet, their people, and whether they operate with integrity. We use those grades to favor companies doing things the right way. Think of it less like a filter and more like a hiring process — we're looking for the good ones.

Most clients use a mix of both. We keep out the bad, and actively look for the good.

Do you have to choose between your values and your financial goals? This is the question I hear most often, and the answer is no — you don't. Responsible investing has come a long way, and the evidence shows that companies with strong ethical practices tend to be better run and more stable over time. Doing good and doing well financially aren't at odds.

I got into financial planning because I believe the decisions we make today shape the world our kids inherit tomorrow. That's as true for how we invest as it is for how we save. If your money can do more than just grow — if it can reflect who you are and what you believe in — why wouldn't it?
